So after all the back and forth and other BS thats usually abound once the word is even mentioned I thought I would create a thread that is dedicated to the celebration and the ranting that seems to go hand in hand with this controversial "art" form....

here are some links to sites that I come across that either showcase good graff or are inspired by the movement...

http://www.walee.com/ this guy is great, heavily influenced

http://www.daimgallery.com/ My Fav of all time, and a great guy to boot!

Loomit is a great artist.... for some reason his site insn't working on my browser maybe works for others

http://www.loomit.de/version1/home.htm

but here is another site with some of his works, or just google LOOMIT you'll find lots

http://www.graffiti-art.com/phonodrome/loomit/index.html
http://streetfiles.org/loomit

Twist is a great artist from the bay area, have met him many times and is a very friendly humble man, some are going to hate his tags, but his other work is outstanding

http://www.flickr.com/photos/endlesscanvas/galleries/72157622388379886/

MODE 2 is a favorite of mine, a little suggestive in some subjects but a great writer none the less

http://fiveprime.org/hivemind/Tags/mode2

SABER is another great artist from LA, he once did the worlds largest graff piece in the LA river, and fell in raw shit to do it too!

http://saberone.com/graffiti/

Of course Banksy needs no introduction, not a traditional graff artist as he uses mostly stencils but still a pioneer and now has become world famous

http://www.banksy.co.uk/index.html

now go ahead and have a look, I'm expecting a ton of idiotic responses to this thread, but hopefully a few will see something that is really inspiring, I'll add more once I have a bit more time

Cheers

nice works, I wouldn't want one painted on the side of my building unless the artist were to ask permission. That's the only thin about graffitti...we don't have a choice where it goes, and we gotta pay to have it removed

Thats true I don't support tagging, but a lot of the great stuff does have permission there are many legal walls in Toronto.

I wouldn't call any of that stuff graffiti. That's art ... some moron scrawling his initials on the side of a house, or mailbox, isn't art.

You do a dis-service to such artists by associating their art with what most people refer to as graffiti.

I think that at this point even the most conservative types would acknowledge the art form. It's those who just scribble their names onto things in public spaces that are losers. It's also quite pathetic to spend so much time and money on something only to have it destroyed because it was illegal.

There are some initials that one encounters all over the city. Everyone wants to throw the proverbial rotten fruit at those responsible for that.

Calling these people "artists" does a dis-service to the real artists out there. None of this should be associated with art.

wow exactly what and who I expected. too bad so many hacks have such little insight and taste.

to argue the merits of art is one thing to say what is art and isn't, is something no one can say.

I love graff. Not only for its aesthetic value but also for its cultural.

Thanks for the links.

As for what constitutes art: it is simply an expression and manifestation of a person's soul. You can't classify it so stop trying.

true, but, you don't have to know what art is per se to know what you like

that is the lamest cliche in the history of lame cliche, what one person likes is an opinion of that one person it does not credit or discredit the validity of art.

Why so many people so elitist when talking about art and think only their opinion is right and ridicule and put down others? Okay, I am a hack, with no insight and I have poor taste.

You don't even consider the stuff Banksy does is art?

I don't like it, but maybe it is... I don't know, I am just a hack.

Going back to your original post... where is the insight, why should this not be associated with art and how does this do a discredit to "real" artists? How are these people not real artists? so if you can't back up this statement with any meat, then yes you have no insight.

lol, oh yes it does. Of course I'm aware it's a cliche. But one person's art is anothers garbage.. I don't have to know the history of art to like a painting. I don't have to know anything about music to appreciate a good pop song. ..Like it or not, most people will not relate to grafitti as "art" most people's idea of art is plain old scenery paintings. Art is aesthetics and nothing more
