The Pearl River waterfront is beautified and offers a nice strolling opportunity. It's not where the main skyline is located, so the views are more subdued.

Lots of sightseeing boats ply the waters. I recommend taking the evening cruise. The riverfront is lit up as are some of the buildings.

Let's try some Cantonese cuisine. It was only USD 35 to feed a gang of 4 hungry hippos.

Many of the buildings have these canopied streetscapes. It's a great way to beat the heat and the tropical rains.

This is Guangzhou's surprise. The Sacred Heart Cathedral was recently renovated, and welcomes visitors to explore its premises.

Yuexiu Park is a popular green retreat, with plenty of big trees that shade from the hot summer sun.

The location of this condom vending machine is a bit odd. Buy your supply, then go into the park to use?

Zhongshan Memorial Hall looks quite traditional in design, although it does look like it got a renovation recently.

Single deck buses dominate the streets, but they are decorated in all sorts of colours and ads.

A piece of Macau in Guangzhou.

A high-speed train links Guangzhou with Shenzhen, but the station seems a bit outdated for such a modern service.

wow...that city is immaculate....I can only imagine it has a huge population...but everything is so tidy and clean.

1. Guangzhou used to be the key port for foreigners to trade in southern China. Known as Canton at the time, the foreign influence is very evident on Shamian Island, where they settled and grew their community.

5. Behind the historical buildings, a modern city rises.

7. Shamian fronts the Pearl River, the key waterway in southern China. At the river mouth lies Hong Kong and Macau.

9. This thread will focus on the historic buildings on Shamian. Like many other Chinese cities, European-style architecture exists and has been adapted to modern use. Perhaps to foreigners, Shanghai's Bund stands out the most, but these buildings exist in other cities such as Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Qingdao.

22. The Guangdong Victory hotel is a very cheap bet and it seems to get consistently good reviews. A double room would only set you back about USD 50 a night.

27. Shamian is also very leafy. In fact, it was quite difficult to capture the buildings under the canopy.
