Jamesville

This neighbourhood is just north of downtown Hamilton on James St. North. There is a real old world feel here with the colourful homes, lush gardens, outdoor markets and bustling pedestrian traffic. The area has a strong Italian and Portuguese presence. In recent years it has also become the centre of Hamilton's arts community, with at least a dozen galleries. The second Friday of every month features the "James North Art Crawl" from 7-11pm. Here's Jamesville on a rainy Friday morning last November:

Great tour. A very cool/gritty/ethnic/urban part of town... I had no idea it existed. Looks very TO-like. Hamilton's got more than meets the eye.

Flar, thanks for another good batch of photos. As a former resident of Hamilton I nod with recognition at many of your scenes.

If anyone wants "gritty", a shot of the Lister Block could have been included in your tour of James Street North, or maybe you're waiting for its renovation in (hopefully) the near future.

Keep them coming!

Lister will make an appearance in the downtown thread, I think I stayed north of Cannon for this tour. Renovations to Lister could start in the fall, but I would bet on early spring. Looking at these photos again, I see a few more restaurants and galleries have opened since I took them.

Here's some bonus shots from Doors Open Hamilton:

Don't forget James St was one-way until recently. Make people slow down and look what happens; revitalization!* I think it's time Hamilton reversed the damage done by the Main and King St Super Speedways by bringing back two-way to at least King St.

You can drive through downtown at an unprecedented speed, but at what cost?

*does not apply to Barton Village or anything around Stelco/Dofasco
