Ottawa Street, Hamilton

00154.jpg

This 1920's commercial district in East Hamilton grew out of the local textile and fabric industry
which manufactured everything from sewing machines to clothing. Today the Textile District is
a thriving shopping area that has found its niche in fabrics, sewing and home decor. It is also
the site of the very first Tim Horton's location.

Site of the first Tim Horton's. It looks a lot like the other 2800...

Finally! Another Hamilton nabe I am familar with (I know all about the textile district, certainly a good example of a specialized retail area).

Tim Horton's Store #1 has some old displays and merchandise from the old days (who could forget the Timbit critter?), but it is a shame that they had to add the beige front and the new signage to make it look like the rest.

Philip Johnson did the Limoncello tower. The European Textiles headquarters is by Robert A.M. Stern. Michael Graves did the Cuts Are Us building. The U.S. Fabric Mill Outlet and the Big Wallpaper Store are early Louis Kahn.

The Floor & Wall building has a certain deconstructivist air to it. Could it be very early Peter Eisenman, perhaps?

Mies's Poco Loco / Tex-Mex take-out & Ice Cream tower is a classic of Modernist understatement - clean lines, simple American bond brickwork, elegant awnings and bold fenestration.

Greta's Flair just has to be Hadid.

More seriously, is that church with the Ionic in antis and Choragic monument on top John Lyle?

Flar: Another good neighborhood to explore in Hamilton-the stand-out to me is that red and blue checkerboard-one of my favorite color combinations! Your pix always come out fine! LI MIKE
