Chedoke Park

This often overlooked but very beautiful early 20th century neighbourhood is tucked under the Niagara Escarpment
southwest of central Hamilton and within walking distance of Locke Street. Most of the homes pictured are middle
to upper middle class, with some working class streets to the north and closer to industrial areas. The older
homes in this area are typically Edwardian, built up until about 1930. Tudor Revival starts to dominate the streets
built later, probably into the 1940's, with a few other revival styles are also represented here and there. Edwardian
and Tudor Revival seem to go very well together. There are several other neighbourhoods like this in Hamilton as well
as in many North American cities both large and small.

A railroad, an old industrial area and Highway 403 (Chedoke Expressway) separate the Chedoke Park/Kirkendall area from
West Hamilton:

I find there's a marked Prairie undertone to much of Hamilton's "Edwardian" housing that Toronto lacks--and I seem to recall that Prairie architect George Maher did something in Hamilton...

You could probably call this one Prairie:

I remember seeing a textbook example of a Prairie house somewhere near the base of the Mountain but I can't remember exactly where it was. When I first started exploring Hamilton's streets I didn't have much of an eye for residential architecture so I didn't take pictures of many interesting houses early on. Someday I should revisit some of the streets I haven't been on in several years.

I know there's a very Prairie-like thing where Queen St ends and starts climbing the Mountain...

Good Chedoke Park (Hamilton) Pics!

Flar: Good pics of Hamilton's Chedoke Park neighborhood-it seemed to me that the Fall foliage and feel made it quite inviting! I like pics 8 and 12 for Fall foliage and I like the hill shot in pic #52. I like the dog in pic #32 - I guess he's the Home owner there! LI MIKE
