Nice to see it come back, but sorry this location is not in or at the entrance to Chinatown so it is an odd spot to put it in. We may yet again puzzle visitors and tourists with our strange ways of doing things.
It's being put at the same location as the original one, at what was the entrance to the historical Chinatown.

There was never a gate across 97 Street near Jasper Avenue, however that was the location of the original Chinatown, before it was demolished for urban renewal / Canada Place. It's a fitting location for it, as it's the gateway to both the present-day Chinatowns South and North. It will also be prominent from the River Valley and should show up in many photos of Downtown from the south.

No, it is not the same location. There was never a gate across 97 Street the section of which is here has nothing else significantly Chinese on it.

The previous 102 Ave location was the west entrance to the old Chinatown area. There are still a few remnants in this area even more when it was first put up, so while tenuous that location made more sense. Of course now that is not an option because of the LRT.

Whoever thought that increasing the size and height of the column plinths would create a better pedestrian (or vehicular for that matter) relationship with the gate and the adjacent buildings is probably the same person that thought those f'ing huge street lamp bases would be a good addition to Jasper Avenue...

  • Construction crews are expected to begin site set-up at the location of the new Chinatown Gate (97 Street between 101A Avenue and Jasper Avenue) the week of March 9. A partial road closure of one northbound lane on 97 Street will occur during site mobilization to deliver construction fencing. Another lane closure may be required southbound to mobilize site trailers. These closures are anticipated to last one to two days each. A complete road closure is scheduled for a duration of two weeks in late May to early June. Further information will be provided in the upcoming weeks once the details are finalized. Sidewalk access will remain open on both sides of 97 Street during mobilization and throughout the construction period. The gate is anticipated to be completed in 2027.

It will be nice to have it put up again, although I agree with concerns related to placement. It would be better to put it somewhere closer to where most of Chinatown is now.

There is a gate in Louise McKinney park already that serves as an entrance to the Chinese Garden:
