Harper Tories deliver on $25-million promise to Harbourfront Centre

Toronto's Harbourfront Centre will get $25 million in federal funding over five years in an effort to provide some stability to allow it to plan future cultural events there.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced the funding on Tuesday in Toronto, citing an election pledge made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"The Harbourfront Centre contributes to the vitality of Toronto's waterfront by promoting Canadian culture and attracting tourists," Flaherty said in a news release.

Flaherty, who also serves as the minister responsible for the GTA, also planned to visit other cultural attractions in Toronto to hear their funding requirements.

Flaherty dismissed suggestions the federal government is trying to repair its relationship with Dalton McGuinty's Liberal government.

Harbourfront Centre is a non-profit cultural organization that creates high-quality events and activities that educate and entertain a diverse public. It was created in 1972 and draws more than 12.6 million visitors each year.

I heard this on the radio this afternoon. What the hell is this suppose to mean exactly? Is this merely a recycled pledge made by the Liberals? Is this $25 million for the new Canada Square or for new programming?

FM: Toronto should be thankful Harper even took the time to mention the city.

Hey, this is Toronto Harbour, not Wannsee. Why do the Harper Tories care, anyway.

Ah, I love to gratuitously tease Godwin (or play with the silliest far-right Tory stereotypes)...

The Government of Canada will allocate $5 million per year over the next five years to support the operational requirements of the Centre.

hmmm, while sustainable funding is nice, I would have liked to see the $25 million for the Canada Square Project at the same time.

Now Toronto's had its fair share... time to return to shovelling money into Quebec M. Harper.

I wonder what's up with Canada Square? My recollection is that several millions (20?) was set aside for a competition. I guess this project is dead. A shame, because it would have been the single biggest improvement to Harbourfront.

Well, if West 8 won the design competition (and that's likely), the site would be used for "fine grained urban fabric"...

Is it? I guess that's what we Canadians like! ;)

In related news, the government has released a new map of Canada. A few surprises.
