According to an architect friend, this type of driveway will no longer be allowed. Anyone have any more info?

Experience has shown that rain water would flow down the incline to the drain, which can get plugged up, in turn causing flooding. That is why the garage has to be close to level with 1 or 2 living levels above it.

This situation looks OK as the streetline is probably 10 feet back of the hydro pole down the street but in many locations the excavated slope starts well within the road allowance and conflicts depthwise with utilities that may be located there. I have seen examples where the home owner chopped out the sidewalk placed fences 15 feet or more out on the municipal road allowance thinking that they owned everything right out to the curb. Another factor is that the garage floor must cover the drains that in turn must be configured to slope down to the municipal sewer pipes under the road.

Very interesting guys. And I thought they were being banned purely on aesthetics. They do look pretty ugly with the car's butt sticking out.

They were always a stupid, and of course ugly, idea. Good riddance.

They're also dangerous, it's almost impossible for a reversing car to see any pedestrians behind him.

Unless you shovel everything off and use copious amounts of salt, these driveways become luge tracks. They're also urban sinks for all sorts of trash and debris.
