well they aren't lit because they have no lights as you can see in that photo. urban explorers use flashlights and other lights so they see where they are going and to help capture these beautiful photographs.

As awesome as those photos are, you couldn't pay me to go in there. The amount of virus and bacteria you must expose yourself to has got to be quite high.
Not to mention, what if there was a sudden expulsion of sewage into the pipes!

A friend of mine died at age 13, when he was caught in the stream that runs through Sherwood Park - a sudden downpour, the river rose too fast and he was swept away. And this was out in the open, not in a tunnel. R.I.P dear Brian.
