UHN is having a good month, scoring another 52M donation. This one to build an ER dedicated to Seniors over at the Western Hospital site.
The money comes from the John and Myrna Daniels Charitable Foundation. It is apparently the largest donation to Emergency medicine in Canadian history.

A new Canadian precedent (largest ever gift by an individual).

A woman, confessedly, of whom I hadn''t even heard, Miriam Bergen has left 500M to The Winnipeg Foundation.

I can say this much, her name doesn't appear on any of the Canada's richest lists, which typically bottom out around the 1B mark.

An extraordinary act of generosity, that if even 1/2 matched by Canada's billionaire class would be utterly transformative for the country (at at least could be)

Depending on the list, Canada's Billionaire classes are worth in the range of 250B collectively.

So donating 1/2 would be 125B and if treated as an endowment would throw off 5B annually in perpetuity.

The Irresistible Appeal of the ‘Post-Industrial Park’

In ‘Parks for Profit’, a sociologist argues that glitzy urban parks that rely on private funders can trigger displacement and drain resources from other public spaces.

Humber River Regional Hospital's primary campus will now be known as Hennick Humber Hospital following a 50M donation to the organization.

The details of how the money will be used are a bit blurry, it reads as up to 12.5M for an endowment fund, money for research, and community services and equipment.

So it doesn't read as funding renos or expansion of any scale; but may include, limited renos or larger scale investments in things like ORs or imaging suites, but those are my examples as I see none in their presser.

HRH helped my uncle towards the end of his life. Hopefully the funding they receive goes towards making the facility even better than it is now.
