I am part of a newly formed condo board in a downtown condo and am looking to fill our permanent legal council position. If you've served (or serve) on a board and are happy with your council, I would appreciate any recommendations you may have.

Thanks

Fine and Deo

We use Fine and Deo up on Steeles, they are very easy to talk to, you can actually get hold of them, and they only have Boards as clients, they do not have any management companies as clients. If you google various condo mag articles and check the CCI National, CCI Toronto, ACMO websites you will get the names of the most prominent condo lawyers in Toronto, they are on the BoDs of these groups. Read their articles in each group's monthly magazines or at their law office websites, and then invite them in for an interview with the Board. Each condo legal firm has great handouts for Boards to use. Also check out Gerry Hyman's Q&A column in the Toronto Star on Saturdays. Make sure that you do not use the same lawyer as your management company or your developer. We think junior lawyers are just as good as their supervisors, but still, you spend about $200 to $500 an hour, having the lawyer present for a few meetings of the "new Board" really sets everybody straight right from the gitgo. Bye.
