From Curbed LA:

"USC today celebrated the official start of USC Village, a 15-acre mixed-use project that will replace the University Village shopping center with five-story residence halls for 2,700 students, as well as a grocery store, a fitness center, a drugstore, a "mobility hub" with information on public transit options, and loads of other retail totaling 115,000 square feet.

The new development will also feature a centrally-located plaza, surrounded by eateries and outdoor dining space. Missing from the designs are a hotel and movie theater, notes the LA Times, which have been left out (at least for now) because of the proliferation of such amenities in nearby DTLA. "We are growing to the north in a big way. USC Village will no longer be adjacent to the campus. It will be the campus," says USC President C. L. Max Nikias in the university's release. The estimated $650-million USC Village, designed by Harley Ellis Devereaux, is expected to open in 2017."
