Magnificent New York City - Part I

I love the lighting in Times Square. Its actually quite stunning. Too bad that its just a glorified mall food court these days. Any semblence of real New York is long gone. I was there many times from the 70's through today. It was gritty New York at its best up until the mid 90's, real Taxi Driver stuff. Sex, drugs and whatever else. Today its all tourists from Iowa. Fun for a quick walk to see the lights but then off to see the real New York City.

We used to stay at the old Taft hotel, on art school trips in the early '70's. Times Square was delightfully rundown and quite disreputable then. One night my friend Beni Sung and I went into a tiny bar there, crowded with black drag queens, and had a great old time. No doubt they didn't think much of us. Another night, I went to this dreadful touristy gay-ish nightclub with Richard Fung, another OCA friend. We paid a fortune for drinks, and watched some dreadful drag show with canned applause. It seemed very old fashioned, like some "naughty" entertainment from the 1950's. This was four or five years after Stonewall. There was a famous straight rock club we went to as well, but I forget the name. This was at the time when Lennon had moved to NY and I think he played there.
