I'm a huge Olympique de Marseille fan, and visiting the city/Stade Velodrome is on my list of places to visit in the future. It's a rough town, (a buddy of mine almost got killed then when he accidentally went down a wrong street near the train station) but it appears to have a neat vibe to it. thanks for posting these!

The French appear to have a certain affection for this city. I guess there's more to it than meets the eye?

I noticed the grass over the streetcar track... is this something unique to Marseille or common thru out France?

No, it is a common thing, every french city with a LRT system have that.
Infact nerly all light rail system in France were build after 1985.
In the 1950's every french tram system were destroyed, only three system were not, Saint Etienne (only two lines, completly modernised in early 1990's), Lille (only tow lines, completly modernised in 1990) , Marseille (one line completly modernised in 2007 and a new line).

MK: Another neat French city-Marseille!

MK: Good pics again of Marseille - in SE France on the Mediterranean Sea-I would like to know if the French accent spoken there is different then North France-are there regional French language dialects in France? how prevalent is Italian there with Italy so close? I will mention these pics:
#48-52+74-So that is the Marseille Metro-How big is it?
#75-I really like this pic and many others here of Marseille-Nice!

Marseille is southern France, so there is a big difference with Northern France.
Lille is the oposite, the only common point is the large north african community.

Regional dialect are less active in France than in other european country, it don't change that between Lille and Marseille there is a big cultural gap. (northern Europe vs southern Europe)

Italian was our largest source of immigration (in 19th and 20th century (there were 900,000 italian citizen in the 1931 France), Oxford University estimated in 1990 that almost 10% of France population were descendant of italian immigrant. (I have italian root).
Of course the ratio is far higher in big cities close to Italy like Nice, Marseille or Lyon.

Our Little Italy became in little Algeria and become chinatown. Belleville in Paris or Guillotiere in Lyon are the best exemple of it.
