Toronto Mayor David Miller welcomes Port Authority review
TORONTO, May 1 /CNW/ - Mayor David Miller said he welcomes a federal government probe of the Toronto Port Authority's dealings around the Island Airport.
"I've long believed that the Port Authority has been conducting itself in too secretive a manner when it comes to the deals it has made and leases it has signed around the airport," Mayor Miller said. "It is my hope that Roger Tassé's review will mean a full airing of the details that have previously
been kept under wraps. These agreements should be subject to an open and transparent review."
In 2003, Toronto Council, under the leadership of Mayor Miller, voted to stop a bridge to the airport that would have increased the volume of air traffic.
"Torontonians spoke loudly and clearly during the last election that they did not want to see any more activity at the airport," said the mayor. "The waterfront should be a public place to be enjoyed by people, not a place to be
exploited for the private interests of a few. A busy commercial airport puts our waterfront revitalization and the thousands of jobs that come with it at risk."
