Metrolinx's current CEO, former Toronto Star publisher J. Robert Pritchard, was apparently tapped to lead the agency just through its past year of transition and reorganization. Now, they appear to be in the market for someone permanent. Here's the official job description:

Metrolinx
An Agency of the Government of Ontario

is seeking a .....

PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

For a seasoned executive, this is an opportunity to lead a large and growing organization with an ambitious mandate that is poised to make a real difference in the lives of Ontarians.

An agency of the Government of Ontario, Metrolinx is charged with developing and implementing a transportation plan for the metropolitan region encompassing the cities of Toronto and Hamilton, and the regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel and York. With last year’s publication and adoption of a Regional Transportation Plan called The Big Move: Transforming Transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the development aspect of Metrolinx’s mandate took a large step forward. On the implementation side, the recent merger with GO Transit provided Metrolinx with operational know-how. The plan is now in place for transportation infrastructure to support economic growth, environmental improvement and lifestyle improvements, much as it did during the urban boom of the 1970s and 80s. The plan is to build over 1,200 kilometres of rapid transit – more than triple over what exists now – so that more than 80 per cent of residents in the region will live within two kilometers of rapid transit.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive Officer will be accountable for the overall leadership and management of Metrolinx. S/he will develop and execute a long term strategic plan. The CEO and the Board will collaborate in the creation of metrics against which the progress of Metrolinx will be measured, and the CEO will implement operational processes and reporting structures throughout the organization that ensure the timely and transparent achievement of stated goals. The CEO is also responsible for developing an investment strategy by 2013 to support the necessary transportation infrastructure and operating costs.

Metrolinx is mandated to improve regional transportation infrastructure in each of the diverse communities that comprise the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, and the support of those communities is critical to the Agency’s ability to function effectively. As the Agency’s public face, the CEO will engage with each level of government, community leaders, and the media to build support for a transportation system capable of servicing the current and future needs of all Ontarians.

As the ideal candidate for this role, you are a seasoned executive with significant experience in positions of comparable responsibility in both the public and private sectors. Your reputation is well established, and will advantage you in creating productive and influential relationships with senior public servants (including the Deputy Minister of Transportation and other senior municipal, provincial and federal officials), public officials, and business, labour and community leaders in construction, infrastructure and community-building. You have a track record of leadership success in large, complex, multi-stakeholder organizations, and you can point to examples of past instances where you created, sustained, and communicated a vision that instilled a strong sense of purpose in staff and other key stakeholders. You have consistently demonstrated the ability to develop and communicate both urgency and accountability, and to balance an entity’s mission and priorities with resource constraints. Your leadership instinct is to hold people accountable for performance, and your experience combines private sector “know how†with an appreciation for the nuances and rewards of serving the public good. You have a demonstrated interest in and capacity for public policy and public service.

To be considered for this position, please submit your resume and related information online at www.odgersberndtson.ca by going to the ad on this website, selecting where you heard about the opportunity and clicking “Add to Listâ€. So, erm, start polishing your resumes, everyone?

Why would you want this job when you will be rubber stamping the orders from the top in the first place??

2011 is election year and the government wants stuff in the ground a low cost so it can say "look what we have done"

J. Robert Pritchard has been around and knows when to bail out when he cannot do the job he was hired for in the first place.

We may get someone as a figure head until the election is over.

Then dealing with a board that is out of tune does not help as well member of Metrolinx itself.

Pritchard was hired to be a transitional CEO; that was clearly stated at the time of his hiring. Further, if he was "bailing out", why would he be taking over as Chair?

^ then the world will come to an end as we know it...2012

Then we will have an LRT on everyone's doorstep. This in fact may be a possibility, as Miller will be out of a job at the end of this year, and a board like this would be a perfect place for him to go, so he may apply. I think he may have a good influence for the province to favour more projects inside the city as a priority vs spending money on 905 projects.

It is not the CEO's job to set the strategic direction of the corporation. The job of the CEO is to implement the strategic direction that is set by the board of directors. The question that should be asked is "Is _________ capable of finding new and innovative ways to implement the projects that they are told to implement?"
