Construction[edit]

Construction of the station called for relocation of the landmark World Trade Center cross in 2006. The permanent station is scheduled to be completed and open on December 17, 2015.

On July 8, 2008, the first prefabricated "ribs" for the pedestrian walkway under Fulton Street were installed on the site.[32] The mezzanine level of the station is undergoing major construction and work on the foundation is still underway.[33]

As of March 1, 2011, over 225 of the 300 steel pieces which make up the roof of the station have been installed.[34] Later that month installation of the Vierendeel Truss, one of the hub's key components, began with the installation of a 50-ton section of the truss. When fully installed the combined weight of the truss will weigh 271 tons. The truss will serve as the mezzanine roof and also act as a support for the northeast corner of the WTC Memorial.[35]

By July 6, 2012, the following events were occurring:

Main WTC hub site:
Steel erection for oculus substructure
Construction connecting to Vehicular Security Center complex
Greenwich Street corridor (1 train subway box): steel and concrete placing under 1 train subway box
Preparations for installation of east arch truss
Hub construction contract awarded to Skanska in summer 2010

Pedestrian walkway ("east-west connector"):

The new West Street pedestrian underpass (the "east-west connector") links the WTC station mezzanine with Battery Park City's World Financial Center on the west side of the WTC site just south of 1 WTC and across West Street. It opened on the afternoon of October 23, 2013.[36][37]

As of June 2013, 10 pieces of exterior arches have been installed for the Oculus. The initial construction is expected to conclude in the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015, and the internal construction including paint, turnstiles, ticket booths, etc. is expected to complete in the end of 2015, with an official opening scheduled on December 17, 2015.[38]

By November 2013 about 110 arches, and the beginning of the wings have been installed. ;)

Impressive none the less, though the end product was less dove (which was the original design intent) and more haircomb.

I'm just so glad that the station and other things are being built there to get rid of that eyesore crater that once was there!!
 
It gives or resembles the shape of a dinosaur, such as the Stegosaurus! ;)

The main complaints about the transportation hub is that it doesn't increase capacity and is well over budgeted. To their credit, they were able to get PATH trains running to WTC in 2003 after having their WTC facilities completly destroyed and tubes flooded by the terrorist attacks. Had it been a planned redevelopment, I'm sure PATH capacity, NYC transit, and maybe even long island railroad trains would have been given more serious planning.

It will also be a very impressive transportation and retail facility once it opens.
 
Here's a peek at one of the new PATH Station platforms. Note the very unusual & strange support holders for the third rail. They look very unusual! Never seen that type before.

Also, note the artwork on the wall. You'd think that since this is a very newly rebuilt station, that they'd put in better signaling for the trains, such as ATC (Automatic Train Control). Still, there is always some room for improvement.

Yeah, even though this new station might look very artistic in design & planning, it almost seems that though they were flying by the seat of their pants. Guess they had to make some cuts and alternate plans in the design to try to save on costs and financing wherever they could. ;)

The station looks impressive, except for that mistake in putting a train signal in front of the art piece. That shouldn't have happened. Either the signal should have been located somewhere else, or the artwork should have been conceived with the signal in mind.
