Now that Obama won, and there has been a defining shift to the left by the youth of America, should the USA and Canada finally tear down the border and become one country?

Universal Health for USA. And the right to live, work and vote anywhere in the USA for Canadians.

It seems like the time is right.

Would the Republicans want us? We're almost as populous as California, which has 55 Electoral College votes, and still pinko at heart.

The USA still has a long long long way to go. Just because they elected Obama, it means nothing. The leader is only as good as the people he leads, and there's far too much division and polarity in America that is very unCanadian.

A popular way to put it is that the Democrats are as far left as the Canadian Conservatives are. If the Democrats proposed policies put forward by the Liberals, NDP, or Greens, they would have been destroyed.

Do you mean to say, if the Democrats proposed policies like the Liberals, NDP or Greens, they would be out to pasture like the Liberals, NPD and Greens are in Canada?

The young generation of American's voted across the board for Obama. They will inherit the country. And they're pretty much on the same page as Canada. So why wait? There's no reason to have to two countries when you could have one.

I think the poll should be re-visited next decade. US is in such a mess, it would take years to fix. Do we want Canada submerged into their mess? Canada isn't well enough off enough to save US's financial problems.

What happens when it is fixed? And in the next 8 years Obama has harmonized the USA to basically reflect Canada? What happens when we find ourselves looking in a mirror?

The benefits don't outweigh the risks. The isn't much upside (unless you count being trapped in the theocratic ideological nightmare of a political system), and a whole lot of downside.

Besides, we're already tethered enough to the USA. We should be reaching out to the rest of the world to reduce our exposure.

I hate to burst your bubble, but this isn't going to happen. The US won't be getting universal health care. They can't afford it. They can't afford tax cuts.

Same-sex marriage is fully legal in Canada. It was just banned in three states. Marijuana is de facto decriminalized in Canada. The USA has and will continue to execute their war on drugs. And the second amendment isn't going anywhere.

Obama will disappoint you terribly, I'm afraid. He was the right choice, but he sold Americans something he can't deliver.

First of all, I doubt that will happen. And even if it does, so what? Why does that mean giving up our own identity?

Even under the best possible circumstances with Obama, America will still be to the right of Canada. And, of course, the Republicans will eventually regain power. Then what? Do we split up again?

Neither Americans nor Canadians would be interested in such a scheme. Good fences make good neighbours. Plus, future President Palin would never approve after having been duped by Canadian pranksters.

I wouldn't underestimate Obama's abilities or the American desire for change. So far, the comments suggest nothing will happen. But what if it does? And what if one morning you wake up and the USA resembles Canada, more than anyone could ever have imagined?
