Great news, this was a really neat event that suits our city well. Really happy to see it return.

Red Bull Crashed Ice makes its return to Edmonton
After skipping the city for two seasons, Red Bull Crashed Ice will make a stop in Edmonton in 2018.

The World Championship event will take place March 9 and 10.

The downhill ice race brought over 70,000 people to downtown Edmonton for the World Championship event in 2015.

“It’s an incredible marquee event for us to showcase Edmonton in the winter,” Edmonton Tourism’s Renee Williams said. “We saw huge draw for spectators when it was here in 2015, so we’re very excited to have it back in the city.”

Construction of Edmonton’s Red Bull Crashed Ice track starts Friday
Louise McKinney Riverfront Park and a section of downtown Edmonton will soon be transformed for Red Bull Crashed Ice. Work on the track will start on Friday.

The Ice Cross Downhill World Championship Finale will return to Edmonton on March 9 and 10.

The track will start on Jasper Avenue and swerve through Louise McKinney Park.

The event sees athletes on ice skates race down a track made of ice and filled with drops, turns and gaps. Racers can reach speeds of over 60 kilometres per hour.

Construction of the track will take place mainly between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in Louise McKinney Riverfront Park and on 101 Avenue between Jasper Avenue and 96 Street.

There will be a full closure of 101 Avenue between 96 Street and Jasper Avenue on Feb. 9 at 7 a.m. until March 19 at 12 p.m.

Grierson Hill will be closed on Feb. 10 and 11 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily and on Feb. 12 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The west lane of 96 Street will be closed south of Jasper Avenue on March 5 from 6 a.m. to March 14 at 4 p.m.

Track construction for Red Bull Crashed Ice set to begin
The city said crews were set to start building the track for Red Bull Crashed Ice Friday – and released details on planned road closures in the area.

Officials said construction work is expected to mainly take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in Louise McKinney Riverfront Park and on 101 Avenue between Jasper Avenue and 96 Street.

A list of specific road closures was released Wednesday:
  • Full closure of 101 Avenue between 96 Street and Jasper Avenue, starting on February 9 at 7 a.m., until March 19 at 12 p.m.
  • Full closure of Grierson Hill, on February 10 and 11 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily, and on February 12 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Closure of the west lane on 96 Street, south of Jasper Avenue from March 5 at 6 a.m. to March 14 at 4 p.m.

Red Bull Crashed Ice track promises to be longer, faster than 2015
The track is longer, the jumps are bigger and the beer gardens will flow more freely as the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship, a.k.a. Red Bull Crashed Ice, returns to Edmonton.

“I think it’s going to be a huge success again,” Patrice Drouin, president of Gestev Inc. — the company producing the event — said Wednesday.

He was confident the experience, from both the perspective of the public and the athletes, will be better than in 2015, which drew 70,000 spectators.

Nearly 150 workers have spent weeks building the 455-metre ice track, stretching from the top of Grierson Hill Road and winding through Louise McKinney Riverfront Park.

“I think it’s going to be fast and a lot of air time,” said Drouin.

The track boasts a vertical drop of 40 metres from start to finish, with a number of challenging obstacles designed to knock riders off their skates.

After launching from the starting gate and landing the first 1-1/2-metre drop — with racers expected to reach speeds in excess of 60 km/h in the first half — skaters will hit the Canadian Big Air, a jump engineered to break the world record for the longest jump on skates, previously set at 27 metres by Tory Merz in 2016.

Athletes will then have to put on the brakes going into a 180-degree turn designed to steal all of the speed and momentum built up after landing the jump, to force athletes to battle back for speed and position.

“It cuts the race in two, making the racing more attractive, more dynamic,” Drouin said.

Red Bull Crashed Ice returns to Edmonton with new features

Ice skaters compete in the final of the "Redbull Crashed Ice", the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship

The Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship is returning to Edmonton with a longer and faster track for another adrenaline-soaked, action-packedevent.

The Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship will see 64 athletes from 20 countries skate through thrilling obstacles that include ambitious drops, sharp turns and narrow tracks for the championship title.

This year, the 455-metre track, longer than the one in 2015, is starting at Jasper Avenue and going down to Louise McKinney Park.

It also includes new features such as a 40-metre drop called the Canadian Big Air that is expected to launch athletes higher than 88 feet into the air.

“The Canadian Big Air is something that everybody will be saying, 'Wow'. It will be fun watching it," said Patrice Drouin, president of Gestev, the event organizing company.

"We made the event better for the crowd."

Another new feature is the narrowing of the track to a point where only a single athlete can pass through at a time. Drouin says because athletes are not allowed to touch each other, it will make the race more challenging.
