Everyone remembers The Real Toronto DVD that came out in the fall of 2005. IT was a DVD that came out years ago putting the spotlight on life in improvished areas of Toronto.

Not everyone remembers. I don't remember. Guys standing around talking with a bandanna covering their face. That would put we to sleep pretty fast.

What's so real about it? It just rep's one tiny part of Toronto. Do the kerchief-wearing babushka's of High Park area get any media coverage? Yet they look just as threatening/harmless as those wanna-be gangsters....

The title is a misnomer, since the video is about a fringe minority. You might as well show people driving Bentleys to their Bridle Path mansions and call it the "Real Toronto".

I agree, there is not much "real" about the group portrayed in those videos. Toronto ain't Detroit/South Bronx. :/

The real title of the video should be poseur Toronto. Toronto posing as bad-ass because young people equate bad-ass with cool and deeply yearn to be associated with cool. At some point everyone starts to just find this kind of thing sad...probably at the point where they themselves become uncool... and no longer care.

The Parkdale one was interesting, though. The guy who does the neighbourhood walks seemed like an ordinary guy with an interesting past living in New York and Montreal before coming to Toronto. He explores some of the issues of crime without wanting to seem like a thug. He also defended his neighbourhood as having a sense of community and noted all the families living there. I think he was the most realistic presenter of the less privileged Toronto in these videos I've seen so far.
