I thought the interior was supposed to be preserved too. Weren't there some noteworthy cast-iron columns and other elements to protect?

Agreed. Seems like a lot of money for a rather small result.

exactly.

the project's incorporation of the facade (an existing heritage listed building) isn't any different than many condo mixed-use development.

since they've taken 3 lots on corner of Yonge & Charles St W, that's a good large buildable plot (maybe 80' x 150').
i'm disappointed they didn't build a 25+ storey tower there.

Talked to a manager of the temporary Shoppers next door and they said occupancy of the new store will be sometime next year. Apparently part of the delay was because someone bought the adjacent properties along Charles St. and the builders had to apply for new permits all over again to gain access to the site from Balmuto via the parking lot behind those buildings.

Probably had to gain access to the site from St. Nicholas.

Thanks Benito, that's what I meant - St. Nicholas not sure why I wrote Balmuto. Anyway, excavation is moving along, so it looks like construction is now beginning in earnest.

PROGRESS!!!

post laminated timber for the basement support beams? seems odd. I was under the understanding that those came at a significant premium over standard structural construction methods.
