While they're often pretty dodgy places, rooming houses provide housing for highly vulnerable and marginalized people, whose only alternative is probably a shelter in most cases. Yes the palace arms is going to be the largest mosque in Toronto god willing, we thank our saudi brothers and the city of Toronto for their understanding of our needs by relaxing the heritage rules that go against our beliefs as muslims, we are also glad to notify the areas residents that we have also purchased all the polluting body shops and this makes for a cleaner quite place to both raise our families and worship God , we are glad to inform you that we are also helping to house the former tenants faraway from this site as we know they have caused a lot of crime in our neighborhood THANK YOU we look forward to breaking ground summer 2017

No we are not purchasing the esso lot we have also purchased all the body shops and God willing north americas largest mosque will rise from this site , we have made a compensation offer to all the long term tenants including offering them all low rent housing in Cambridge on the site of what was going to be our mosque and on that site is a 108 unit building that we will renovate and offer well below market value to the city of Cambridge to house the undesirables and cover the extra law enforcement that may be required in housing this type of individuals , construction begins summer 2017 God willing
 
Admittedly, building North America's biggest mosque near the downtown core seemed like an interesting idea, even though I'm Christian. Downtowns are best when they're diverse and vibrant. But there's no use in forcing diversity. A mosque is best suited for a neighbourhood where there are already many Muslims. That way, people don't have to travel far for worship and can set up businesses around the mosque and form a vibrant community.

A lot of places around Canada have had mosques built on cheap land that was available even if there weren't Muslims close by. The mosques attracted Muslim residents who purchase houses, land and set up businesses near by.

Also the current mosque at Chestnut and Dundas also the one on Adelaide doesn't particularly serve the residents near by but moreso the professionals and students who commute/work there.​

It seems to work out better in the suburbs. A lot of Muslims are immigrants who start families. They're less likely to live in this area and more likely to live in the suburban areas of the city with more affordable housing for families. A lot of people going to the mosque would probably be driving in from the 905.

That is true and you are correct, but there might be a new demographic of Millenial Muslim Canadians like myself. Who are children of those immigrants in the suburbs and are doing as the other millenials are doing and moving downtown.
 
I don't really see the building of a place of worship, or any other use for that matter, as forcing diversity. As long as the zoning can be met, I generally believe that the religious community itself is best placed to determine which site is best suited for its congregation. In the past, the Catholics, the Methodists and the Anglicans all built prominent, large and preeminent places of worship in central Toronto, intended as much to declare their role in the life of this city as for anything else, and Muslims (and anyone else for that matter) are as free to do so as those other religious groups. And like any religious or ethnic group, Muslims will build a vibrant community as they see best - there is no one model for doing so.

Ironically, it's a lot of those large churches that seem to mainly attract people driving in from all over.

Having said all that, I think the point may be moot. Is Palace Arms really being adaptively reused for a mosque?
