I had always assumed that the PATH bridge was going to enter Backstage by the double door but in that case why are they demolishing more of Backstage in that area?

I think you have it correct but aren’t they just cleaning up the areas of Backstage where the old bridge was removed?

Yes, I think you are right. Here is a Streetview shot of the original - the area on Backstage clearly needed some work done to fix up.
