Hm, interesting perspective. I definitely see Tecumseh as hero not victim - but a tragic hero nonetheless. You're right that Tecumseh needs buy-in from native groups before he is going to get any official recognition. That seems like the problem. Canadian natives don't see him as one of their own, so there's nobody to push for that memorial.

To bring this slightly back onto topic ... James Laxer is giving a talk about Tecumseh and Brock at Fort York Wednesday, so see you there maybe.

^I thought the bridge was just on-hold for now. IIRC the Ordnance St. development applications all have section 37 funds earmarked for the FY pedestrian bridge. As an aside, what happens to that money if the bridge actually does get cancelled?

VPCC is right: the bridge will eventually go ahead. S37 funds are being lassoed for it.

From the city project page for the bridge it looks like the upcoming community consultation for the Ordnance Street developments will include some bridge presentations/discussions as well.

Project Update January 2013 – EA Addendum
In November 2011, City Council directed City staff to maintain the original bridge design but review new alignment options to reduce costs. The City will host a Community Consultation Meeting to present and discuss these new alignment options for the bridge. This meeting is also to consult on the Planning Application for: 10, 11, 25 Ordnance Street and 45 Strachan Avenue.

Details for this public event include:

Niagara Street Junior Public School (222 Niagara Street) Thursday January 31 6:30pm – 9:00pm Public Drop-in Event 7:15pm Presentation

Hmm id say, use it to build the necessary city infrastructure for the new residential neighbourhood, ( roads, greenspace, etc. etc. etc)....the place is a derilict dead-zone

Literally, as it is a burial ground. Improvements to garrison Common are part of this project and (mostly?) funded. I hope they don't go to far. It's a wonderful peaceful space right now, though scruffy.

Burial grounds were the "parks" in the early days of the Town of York and the City of Toronto. They were essentially the only "green space" in the town and city, especially before they get filled up.

^The new proposals in the EA addendum for the bridge actually look good! The two bridge solution might make more sense - it will give people access to that little Ordnance Street triangle. Who knows? Maybe a budget-focused process will surprisingly bring us a *better* solution.

But yah, the whole combo - Stanley Park addition/bridges/Ordnance Street triangle/Garrison Park should be a great access way for pedestrians/bicyclists to avoid major streets on the way to the waterfront.

Potential bad news from the Jan 9 Public Works and Infrastructure Committee:

Item: http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2014.PW28.5
Report: http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2014/pw/bgrd/backgroundfile-65548.pdf

Quote - underlined for emphasis:

A cost review of bridge structural options based on arch design alternatives, railway corridor user requirements, and other costs has been completed based on the alignment options and the preferred alignment identified in the EA Addendum. Build Toronto and City staff have concluded that the arch bridge design and construction, and all related railway, real estate, legal and contract administration costs would still exceed the project budget of $19.7 Million.

The timely completion of the Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge is critical to the development of the Ordnance Triangle lands and also achieves other City transportation and public realm objectives. In order to fulfill this goal, City staff and Build Toronto are recommending the development of a Design/Build process in order to achieve a high quality bridge design and complete its construction within the current budget. The Design/Build requirements should allow for a range of design and material options and not be restricted to an arch design.

Bridge update: (Source: http://www1.toronto.ca/wps/portal/contentonly?vgnextoid=5c878dd3f2ce1410VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD)
January 2014
Early this year, City staff will be filing an Addendum for the original 2010 Environmental Study Report. Area stakeholders will be notified once the Addendum is issued and available for public review.
You may recall, a number of bridge alignments were presented last year. The Addendum will detail a change to the preferred alignment which now shifts the south end of the bridge approximately 60 metres westerly. The north landing point remains as planned (Stanley Park Extension). The original plan for a long single bridge over both rail corridors is proposed to be changed to two separate shorter structures, linked by a path across the Ordnance Triangle lands with access to the triangle property.
Over the past year, City staff have also been working with Build Toronto, an agency of the City that helps develop under-utilized lands, to review constructing the bridge at a reduced cost and to coordinate this project with area development in the Ordnance Triangle Lands. A staff report which recommends that Build Toronto develop a Design/Build process to deliver the design and construction of the Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge was presented to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) on January 9, 2014 and will now be considered by City Council on February 19, 2014.
