I mean they aren't talking about having peak service to Niagara until 2023, which would likely see construction start soon. But all day service would be 8 years after that.. construction beyond peak service likely won't start until 2023 when the work to get peak service in finishes. Why not announce in 5 years when peak service is approaching?

Politics, that is why. The variables about announcing something 14 years out are so great that it holds essentially no meaning.

The announcement of the RFQ says RFP is going out in summer 2017 - for me this seems fast, was this the original schedule?

It's not that quick. Finch was roughly the same schedule; RFQ September 2015 and RFP February 2016. Finch hasn't been awarded yet but that should be right around the corner.

Hamilton LRT, unfortunately, won't reach financial close before the election. It's seems likely that the contract will be awarded around April 2018 which is probably close enough if the local MPPs don't make it their war-cry during the election.

So to be clear, the LRT extension to Eastgate Square is not part of today's announcement?

They are going to try to get as many project going in early 2018 before the election to show what being done with tax payer money as well doing something for transit and gridlock.

This maybe fine for the GTA, but rural Ontario taxpayer will be voting other colours than red, as they are piss off at Toronto wasting money and the Lib blowing money away on the Hydro cost. The kids bitch how much they have to pay for transmission cost compare to what they use. More farms are moving to solar power and cutting their connection to the hydro grid.

As for all day services to everywhere, 2030 is mostly likely the real date.

Still a mistake not taking the LRT to Eastgate now.
