I’ve never posted on urbantoronto before, but got a unit here and wanted to liven this thread up a bit. Halton’s project page states “Demolition is anticipated to start around June 20 and last 8-10 weeks” so I stopped by today to take photos before it gets taken down.

Looks like most of the interior has already been removed. I’m assuming the process of salvaging the brick facade will take a while so might be some time before we see any drastic difference

Welcome to the world of posting on UT; I appreciate your first effort; and look forward to a second w/the photos!

Edit to add: The photos now being visible; an excellent contribution! Thank you.

Finally an update! Demo started on Monday. I checked all last week and nothing. Pics are from this evening. Little progress; but I think it’s huge that something has finally happened at all seeing this project was cancelled once already

@Edward Skira I’ll keep updating here weekly! Hoping to find some people as excited for this project as I am

Demo is coming along nicely! Photos are from today. At first glance I didn’t realize; but the roof has been removed from half the building and they’ve slowly started dismantling the brick on the front facade.

Also… is it normal for a heritage building to be completely torn down and rebuilt using the original brick? As far as I’ve seen with buildings in Toronto, the facade is left completely intact and the new structure built behind it. Could it be that Halton and Toronto have different requirements?

Tear-downs and the rebuilds happen in Toronto too, if depends upon the state of the underlying structure. The Loblaws Groceterias building at Bathurst and Lake Shore is an example of one that was completely disassembled, and then the brick re-laid against a new structure. (I think what originally faced inwards now faces outwards in that rebuild.) Heritage Boards certainly prefer if the heritage walls can remain intact through the redevelopment process.

Ahh this is interesting. You learn something new every day! The Loblaws building looks really clean so I’m hoping it’ll be the same end result with this project

Haven’t had much time to stop by recently but I did a little walk around today. The demo is coming along well. More progress than I was expecting! Nearly the entire third floor is gone. With the rate they’re going I won’t be surprised if the second level is gone when I stop by next weekend

I’ve gotten super lazy with posting, though I don’t think very many people care to see the progress on this (I hope there’s a few from around town that can join in the conversation though!)

There was a period of about a month where no workers showed up to the site at all. After my last post mid August, they didn’t show back up again until almost the end of September. Here are a few pics over the rest of the demo:

The site looks largely unchanged since the end of December. I believe they’re still waiting on a shoring/building permit. It’s a little irritating to see so much time wasted with nothing happening anymore

You're wrong, it is difficult to keep track of projects in Halton Hills and other 905 areas without the help of posters! Thanks for the updates.

Glad to be wrong! I am thrilled that I’m here to keep tabs on it. I’m hoping more residents around Halton discover this site so there’s more people to discuss the happenings around this area.
@Lperry Keep posting. There certainly people interested. And anything else nearby.
Will do! This site is about to get up heated up so I’ll finally be posting more often. I noticed there’s a page for 42 Mill that nobody has updated as of yet, so I’ll start updating there too 😃

Went by today and poked around to see if there were any changes… So far nothing major, though I spoke to someone working there for an update. They’re waiting for the utility pole that’s smack in the middle of the site to be removed before they begin shoring & excavation. He said it should be removed within a week, and once that’s out things will move pretty quickly.

The below shot is from further back in the parking lot behind the businesses on Main st. They’ve installed new utility poles, and the old ones will be removed along with the one on the end within the site in the background.
