Elevator.

I'm not sure if this applies to new buildings as all elevators by code have to have firefighter switches however, in built buildings you'll see the elevators with firefighter switches marked with a firefighter's hat above the doors on the lobby level. (usually the same elevators as the designated service elevator)
 
So firefighters can use an elevator in the event of a fire? My building was built in '71 and it has one of those red hats on the service elevator. To add, don't new highrises have to have water sprinklers now?

placing piles right in the middle of the site would kinda contradict what the construction man is telling you.

Agree with the contradiction regarding further excavation- but not sure if the shoring machine is drilling for piles. Could this not be the shaft wells for hydraulically operated parking elevators?
