Steve Munro today:

It's good to see that some well informed commentators regard this in a wider view.

Where exactly has that been stated? The study is only being commissioned now, that's all there's funding for at this time.

Here's Rainforest's point made by the Neptis Foundation:

Except the report predate further analysis by Metrolinx on the relief value of the line.

You are correct on timeline, but do Metrolinx re-examine the utilization of the extant ML Rights of Way in lieu of changes and funding realities?

What I read in their earlier report that was linked prior in this string is that ML dismissed their own capacity as inadequate to address perceived need. Perhaps you could provide a link to a later second look on that? Here's all that I can find, albeit in a harried web-search. All that I can find beyond this is TTC sketches based upon the findings in the ML study:

I'm now perusing http://www.metrolinx.com/en/docs/pdf/board_agenda/20150625/2015-06-25_Yonge_Relief_Network_Study.pdf

Yes, this was what was discussed yesterday by a few of us:

"Initial Findings"..."No further evaluation".

Is there anything beyond that that you could link to or quote?

Option 1: RER+ option
• Very limited impact
• Suggests RER 10 year maximizes the potential to attract demand from the Yonge Subway
• No further evaluation

Option 2: Relief Line options
• Attracts significant demand from Yonge subway & Bloor Danforth subway
• Bloor/Yonge station improvements may not be needed
Progressed to full evaluation

Option 3: LRT option
• Attracts demand from Yonge subway, but from further north
• Limited attraction of demand from Bloor Danforth (so BY station improvements still needed)
• Progressed to full evaluation

I just quoted that above as an addendum. That's it? I'll wait for a further reply, and will do a little digging as time permits, and comment later. I'm appalled if that's all there is.

@AlvinofDiaspar

I wonder if it might make sense to create several new subfolders for each of the major Transit projects going on in the city (i.e. one for the Scarborough Subway, DRL, Roadwork, GO Transit)- people inside those subfolders can feel free to start their own topics/overall threads regarding particular topics, so we don't need to have both construction pictures and debates over alignment going on simultaneously in each thread.

Would also allow relevant information and news to stay high up rather than being buried in a megathread.

We may have to end up doing something along said lines - and strictly enforce a primary DRL thread for DRL as currently envisioned only policy. Not necessarily my call though!

Did you read the technical report?

Yes, and it works on figures provided by Metrolinx which I find curious. Steve Munro is questioning a number of presumptions made, as are others. I'd post the section from the report here for discussion, but it pertains to the DRL, as envisioned by the earliest posts on this string. Some of them are quite detailed and interesting, albeit almost a decade dated now. It seems one person's idea of "DRL" is different than others, depending on whether they agree or not.

Is there any more details on the LRT option? This one sounds new to me - any maps? What is the mixed operation going to look like once it goes downtown?

Where exactly has that been stated? The study is only being commissioned now, that's all there's funding for at this time.

"Connecting to the Storage Facility" is part of the evaluation criteria and features prominently in the Detailed Evaluation of Potential Alignments. It was part of the evaluation criteria for the different corridors too. We can talk about how other modes and projects may help or hinder relieving the Yonge side of Line 1 (as has been the case with the Neptis and Metrolinx studies you cite); but the Relief Line study we're now almost three years into has assumed TTC gauge subway from the very beginning.

I'm still not sold on that Gerrard GO station and don't see the need for it if there will be a subway station. Seems way too close to East Harbour, and now that it will apparently be running to Logan it's even closer. Can't help but think it's one part of an attempt by Tory and the Prov to defer RL indefinitely.

Yeah, it seems like overbuilding for the area, and the upstream knock on ridership may make Gerrard RER/"Smart" Track more costly than beneficial. Further, the footprint of the Kiss & Ride and the Bus Terminal is absurd. Good luck getting in or out of there during the morning rush--or any time of day, really. A Relief Line station would achieve most of the same city building and revitalization goals for Gerrard Square without Metrolinx trying to shoehorn suburban design philosophies into an urban context.

*Preliminary Results* of the Alignment Evaluation

Have you any idea of how many preliminary studies litter the last half a century of TTC proposals?

The only reason that document is labelled "preliminary" is because it hadn't yet been presented to council in an official report. The official report states:
There are no provisions for a maintenance and storage facility, as it is assumed that the subway trains for the Relief Line will be stored on the line and cycled to Greenwood Yard for servicing and maintenance, which is similar to the operation of line 4 (Sheppard Subway). Future extensions of the line will trigger the requirement for dedicated maintenance and storage facilities.

The first phase should really include the extension up to the Science Centre, it would still relieve the whole Yonge Line since riders north of it would head south to connect with the DRL instead of heading west to the Yonge Line.

How does it take 7 more years till contruction?
Try fifteen, if ever at all. There's still no funding for it, and Queen's Park is tapped out, now starting to say 'no' to the endless wish-list of Toronto Council. The only real hope in any near future form is Infrastructure/Investment Bank, and the business case for that, from all independent indicators, is poor.
