March 26 - and much work going on at Portland Commons, so a number of pictures. A general comment - one of the last activities in a construction project is installation of the ground floor level glazing. It is generally not done earlier in the construction process as it would interfere with staging of construction materials on the site, and iteh ground level glass would be very much at risk for breakage. As a sign of progress, the ground level glazing has now been completed around the entire building.
Major areas of activity are:
1. South side along Front Street - sidewalk is being poured. Ground floor level glazing is in place
2. Portland Street side - again ground level glazing has now been completed, as has the sidewalk. A number of glazing sections are staged along the sidewalk for installation elsewhere in the building.
3. Roof areas - several groups of workers busy on the roof terraces in different areas of the building.
4. Over the past weeks there have been a series of dump trucks parked on Portland Street, and slowly filled by a skid loader. On asking where all this earth has been coming from - there was no visible sign of excavation around the new building - the answer was that in one of the existing buildings a new spa was being built, with a basement area being dug out for pools. No sign of any specific permits for this, either on the Wellington West side or the 510 Front Street building. The final photo is of a dump truck receiving a fill from the skid loader
And excavation for the spa pools in the basement:
