I have friends in the Beaches who will routinely go to Sherway over the Eaton Centre because of the parking, and avoid Yorkdale because the parking is more of a nightmare than it is at Sherway.

I used to do this when I lived in the Beaches, it was much easier to hop in the car and drive to Sherway Gardens and find parking than try to park near the Eaton Centre or use the Queen St. streetcar to get there.

Sherway is also the go-to mall for most of southern Mississauga, Oakville and parts of Burlington especially those closest to the QEW. Square One can be a bloody disaster to get to. Then there's the parking.

i'm not surprised. That store was always dead. It will be interesting to see how Saks does at Sherway. Downtown Toronto will have three high-end department stores. Plus Hudson's Bay, which carries a lot of high-end clothing now.

That store is pretty terrible, mostly for it being packed far too tight with narrow aisles and just not the selection it needs.

If Holts were to rebuild on the site afterwards, expanded to a second level and fitting the new design of the mall, they'd do fine. Once they close, no doubt that whole section will be rebuilt to the new specs nevertheless, but it may end up as multiple stores. Who knows who they'll get in there, but Simons wouldn't be the worst fit for the mall.

Holt's might disappear eventually. The big American competitors may offer better selection of upmarket fashion, more aggressive markdowns and better online shopping like they do in the US. (I say "may" because we know how Target failed to replicate their successful American business in Canada.) In spite of its renovated stores and improved selection, the Bay might be battered as well with its second-rate customer service. The clothing market in Canada is tough right now with many retailers pulling out of the country. The weaker players will only falter without an aggressive strategy to come out on top.

The Westons, the money and brains behind Holts, also run Selfridges in the UK. Holts won't go down so easy.

Meanwhile, Hudson's Bay may have some upscale lines, but they're aimed more in the middle and will likely always have a larger market segment who can afford their clothing that the segment well off enough to make a habit out of Holts, Saks, and Nordstrom.

In that vein, perhaps the Westons could finally invest in some architecture this side of the pond. We're not bringing Kaplický back from the dead but something as ambitious as the Selfridges Birmingham store wouldn't be unappreciated...

Saks part 2.

Menswear and the Pusateri's food hall share the lower level. You can access them from the escalators in the middle of the store of course, and from lower level parking on the east side of the mall, but there's also a special menswear lobby at mall level with stairs down as well. So, let's start in the Saks "garden" where the mall entrances are.

…and now we are downstairs:

The east half of the lower level is where Pusateri's food hall will be opening in a few week's time:

Until Pusateri's opens, the lower level parking entrance won't open either.

Still underway at Sherway? Part 3:

North of Saks, the remaining part of the Old Sears is about to become Sport Chek and Atmosphere

As the hoarding says above, they'll open in the summer. Joey, meanwhile, recently opened on the north side of the mall.

…while DeBeers opened on the north side of the central square.

On the hallway that leads to the new Gourmet Fare you'll find the relocated Lacoste…
NewHallNewLacoste.jpg

…while in Gourmet Fare itself, a new Italian caffe has opened that's quite a bit better than your standard food court fare.
GourmetFareNew.jpg

Back in the central square, the old Gourmet Fair area has been completed boarded off now as reconstruction of the south wing gets underway.
NordsrtomConst1.jpg

Seven remaining retailers in the south wing will have cramped access until the hall is redone, three on this side, four on the other. I wonder if their rent has been decreased for the duration of the rebuild here?

Outside, the old Sporting Life location is gone, and work is underway on the new Nordstrom store, with the ground floor foundations and columns now in place.

Work on a new south-side parking garage is also progressing.
