The tree canopy in Market Lane is quite nice from above. It doesn't always look so healthy from ground level (see, e.g. https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threa...toronto-rogers-stirk-harbour.778/post-2150392), so hopefully the work they're planning will help restore their health.
Market Lane is truly in need of some attention.
The fountain hasn't worked for years, none of the concrete paving slabs are level anymore, and the whole place is filthy and ugly.
Dated, dismal, depressing, makes you want to rush as fast as possible out the other end.

From the link above...

  • Indigenous place-making/place-keeping
  • New seating and gathering areas
  • Preservation of existing trees
  • Reimaging the existing fountains with a new water feature
  • Upgraded lighting and site lines to improve safety
  • Improved accessibility
  • Reconsider the existing public art feature ‘Return of the Magri-Stechhi’
  • Flexible programmable space directly connected to the new North St. Lawrence Market
  • Pedestrian connectivity from King Street to Front Street

Yes, the current schedule, confirmed last week, remains:

November 2024

The process of hiring a construction team will begin in winter 2024 and conclude in early 2025. Construction is anticipated to start in late spring 2025 and be completed by the end of 2025.

The impending transfer of the PARKING GARAGE was announced at the October meeting of the Toronto Parking Authority. Of course, transfer to the TPA does not mean open to the public but ... (I will ask.)

In Q4 2024, Toronto Parking Authority will welcome the transfer of two (2) new parking garages, including St. Lawrence Market North (Car Park 72) and 121 St. Patrick Street (Car Park 221). These acquisitions together account for more than $20 million of the forecasted capital spend in 2024.

The Court Services website also notes:

Toronto Court Services, South Court currently located at Old City Hall, 60 Queen Street West, will be moving to St. Lawrence Market North in early 2025.

Please continue to check back for the latest news and updates.

Honestly, if they would pave the ground with something nice, rejuvenate the trees in some way and get a working fountain in there (plus a bunch of benches) it would be a massive improvement. And good lighting at night.

They don't need to do much here, it just needs to be a basic square/lane where people can sit and eat lunch or an ice cream from the market.

Generally agree with this and the design seems to provide what you/we want. There were LOTS of community meetings and the result (though not amazing) does seem to satisfy most 'demands'. A lot will rest on execution so let's hope Sanscon is not involved!

I did fill in at least one survey during the consultation process.

I can't really visualize how big the "boulders" they're planning to put there are. The big rock in Yorkville is obviously super popular, as is the big boulder at Sugar Beach (to a lesser extent). Assuming the renderings at page 7 here are roughly what we get, I'd be happy.
