Won't the excavation be quite deep for Trump? I thought it had many levels of below-grade parking.

I thought it was the opposite. Other than a PATH connection, there was little planned for underground, most or all the parking being above-grade. Appropriate in a way, as this is the standard for highrises in Chicago, where TT's mother is being built. (As an aside, if parking in Chicago buildings were underground, as is standard in Toronto, I believe that the difference in average highrise height between the two cities would be a lot less.)

I am also not hearing criticism of TT for having above-grade parking, even though Sapphire was unmercifully ridiculed for the same thing. Hmm...

I was shocked to hear that The Harry was invited (perhaps to rub it in) to the launch.

I was equally shocked that he attended.... thank god for 12 X zoom.... this could have been an international incident.

Don't worry, I'm done spamming the thread... I thought you were a tough audience but now I realize you are all on life-support. Besides the spam, you got to see the new render so there.... raspberry.

BTW, the Harry invite was reported as true.

How many media personnel showed up at the event? I am sick that I couldn't get there today for the ground breaking. The luncheon at the National club before the event would have been fun as well.

Details and pictures folks! please :)

I'll have lots of pictures soon. You would have enjoyed the event! Donald was able to meet and speak with many of the attendees as well as taking several photos with guests. The event went very well!

Just saw the Donald interview on City TV... and he finally explained the down-sizing of the tower!!

Apparently the elevators couldn't reach as high as the original plans needed!

Someone contact the Burj Dubai developers immediately...

The Donald flew into Toronto in his private jet Friday to break ground on the 57-storey Trump International Hotel & Tower.
“This will be one of the great buildings in the world,†New York developer Donald Trump told a small tented audience on the Bay St. site of the proposed skyscraper at the intersection of Bay and Wellington St. in the city’s financial district.

A small tented audience?

Hmm.

Just how excited were they to see the guy? (Although I have to say I'm not surprised to read that the tents were small: Trump is one of those compensatory purchases available for those who feel the need for such.)

Harry was NOT invited. But did try to crash the pre-event at the National Club. Not sure what he was up to, but he was 100% NOT on the list. He was escorted out as this was an invite-only event.

Donald Trump Makes His Presence Felt In T.O.

He's fired! Fired up, that is. Normally you wouldn't pay much attention to a guy who wheels and deals in real estate. But when that guy is Donald Trump, the equation changes. The Donald was in Toronto Friday, attracting the usual excess attention.

The mega-millionaire mogul arrived to break ground on a $500 million hotel-condo complex being built at the corner of Bay and Adelaide Sts. And with that address and his name attached, you know staying there won't be cheap. Trump is already boasting he's sold several units worth more than a small fortune - and the place isn't even open yet. "We sold over $300 million," he boasts. "As of right now, in excess of $300 million has been sold and they're going like hot cakes."

Which proves that someone in Toronto has a lot of money - even if it's not you.

The structure will be one of the biggest in the city, and will contain 118 luxury residences and another 261 hotel rooms. And if you have to ask how much it costs to live there, you can't afford it. The permanent homes are listed at between $1.6 and $1.9 million each.

Not that a man of his means thinks that's a lot of money. In fact, he considers it a bargain. "Actually I don't think the prices are high. When you compare these prices to New York, they're a fraction of what we get in New York. So the prices are going to be very much higher in the future."

Like most things Trump, the building is overstated and pretty posh. It will wind up with "only" 57-storeys, but Trump explains there's a reason for the 'smallish' size. "We scaled it down a little bit but made it the same size because we couldn't get the elevators to go up quite that high, and we like the building, the look of the building a little bit better. And we were able to finish it six months earlier so it worked out to be a better project."

But Trump also has a softer side and his attitude reveals his feelings about money and worthwhile causes. He's doled out a huge amount to help build an aquatic centre in Regent Park at Dundas and Sumach Sts., a condition of the approval for his new edifice five years ago. The price tag: two million dollars. Did writing such a large cheque phase him? "No," he answers without hesitation. "It didn't bother me at all."

So why did the man who fronted The Apprentice pick Toronto for his latest project? "Well, it's always been one of my favorite cities," he responds. "I was up here recently and made a speech and thousands and thousands of people showed up. But I have a lot of friends here." And with friends like that, you don't need a mortgage.

The new Trump Tower is scheduled to open in 2010.

OK TrumpToronto... that explains my photo above.

(have you chuckled once since you took this gig?).

BTW... it appears to be true.... apologies to SUNMAN for posting this as link. Hilarious. Sad. Worth a few hundred bucks if sold to the Toronto Star ($45,000 for similar pic in the U.S.A.).

The kids weren't there. I have video of Trump answering someone's question as to where his kids were. He said they will be here in a few weeks.

Great, now I feel even sicker. Post the pictures though and label who the people are that are in them, I can't wait.

P.S. When can you show us the real rendering if the ones at the site aren't accurate? Not sure I understand why this is such a secret

Probably because he didn't write the cheque.
