OntarioPlace4All is out w/new statements concerning the extent of the public subsidy for the parking garage etc, as well as its analysis of the viability of the spa.

*While I oppose Therme here, I do advise to take any numbers cited in the story with a grain of salt.

Hey Citynews try waiting for the actual press release instead of taking their word for it. Weirdly blogto is better than you on this

"In fact, it's not just cheap rent — the estimated cost to taxpayers is $650 million, plus the plan to demolish the current Science Centre and move it... is at least $300 million. So we're up to a billion tax dollars that are being spent on this project and there has been no proper public hearing," Glover said.

ah so were adding the science center move cost into this. As if the government wouldnt have to spend 200 million anyway to renovate the current building

Chis says that he heard that someone talked to therme last year asking why they want to build on the island and this staff member said "cheap rent"

Id be very skeptical about off the record comments here. This is just an anecdote. You gotta back it up if you want someone to believe you here.

Other than that anecdote, theres nothing new here.

Story in this morning's Star indicates that the expansion of the West Island with 10 acres of fill will obstruct a Combined Sewer Overflow outfall.

In the story, we see that the province is apparently proposing to slightly shift the outfall, at their expense, the reduce the likelihood of human waste and other detritus ending up on Therme's new beach.

However, they apparently want to dump the sewage into the West Channel which has very little current, and is currently used by many swimmers and rowers. This is not going over well.

The desired solution here is that the outfall be extended via pipe further out into the Lake, beyond Ontario Place; but apparently the province doesn't want to pay for this...........

The problem here is having a combined sewage/storm overflow into the lake. Legacy of a lifetime ago when Toronto cheaped out by building combined sewer systems but, here I though the multi-million, massive storage tanks remedied that except in the very worst scenarios. Clearly, if those are insufficient than the city needs to invest more on increasing treatment capacity.

The city is currently in a multi-decade project to try to minimize combined sewer overflows to the point where they should be exceedingly rare, but they have no plans to fully eliminate them nor are they close to completing the work either.

They are insufficient, and the City will be investing in more storage capacity. The tunnel from a few years ago, mainly serves the Western Beaches.............and still not that well, but I digress.

The latter are also severely impacted by the water quality of the Humber River, which is in turn severely impacted by the flows into Black Creek.

There is a new trunk sewer and pumping system coming to the central waterfront...........but its a few years away yet. Sometime in the 2030s
