There will be situations where people feel the need to escort or assist a traveller to/from a point as close to the gangway as humanly possible. That gets complicated in these days of security checkpoints etc.... but it's understandable. That's why the parking garages at airports are as large as they are. And why there is a meet-and-greet fare on UP. It's something that can be managed with the right combination of low short term parking fees, limiting curb space to bus/taxi, and meet and greet fares on transit connections.

What with all the standing-room only trains, is there any indication we will get the all day 15 min frequency back? The "off-peak" 30 min service level has not been pretty as of late.

I think a lot of that problem would be solved if metorolix ran more go trains on the line, people who live in area wouldn't use the upx as much although it could also change once the Eglinton crosstown opens too,

The current rumours are "September".

If things stay as they are however, it sounds like they may be forced to move that up.

is this actually an issue consistently though? I don't take the UP every day but I did take on Saturday in off peak to go to the Weston Farmers Market. Going there (from Union) was very quiet. Coming back (half an hour before a Saturday Blue Jays game) at ~2:30pm was busy but not pre-pandemic busy. Standing room but not packed. I had taken it a couple weeks prior too on a Friday non peak and both times was easy to get a seat.

Yes, I think it is absolutely an issue. The past 2 times I've taken it from Pearson, it was difficult to even get into the train. I am not sure why we should even be considering keeping the lower frequency at this point.
Toronto is not a city that should have a 30 minute frequency airport train, period.

Maybe Metrolinx is taking a page out of the GTAA/CBSA/CATSA book: wait until the line collapses under the load and there are multiple angry newpapger articles, Reddit posts and tweets before doing anything.

On a slightly more serious note, Metrolinx does seem very cautious about increasing service on its lines, which is surprising. I’m curious about why.

Lol, tell that to my wife. We attended a wedding in Newfoundland a few years back where I took two weeks off and drove there but she could only get one week off and flew. I waited outside the airport (cell lot?) for her to call once she'd picked up her bags, which took a lot longer than I expected based on her on-time arrival. When she did finally call she was right pissed off, as she'd been waiting inside for a romantic "Welcome to Newfoundland!" reunion hug. Oops.
Ya, big opps! St. John's (or probably any other Island airport I imagine) isn't what I would call a jam-packed airport in terms of people or vehicles.

I get that - some people will always need accommodation and assistance. I found it is actually more noticeable at Arrivals. When you are departing, there is more process and time issues and most of the 'good-byes' seemed to take place at the curb. For arrivals, the crowd seemed to be invariably in the concourse waiting for passengers to emerge. A half-dozen or more to greet one or two passengers always struck me as a bit much.

I've always felt that the cel-phone lot is almost a poorly advertised secret. I would much rather do that than constantly drive the 'slow loop' or play the illegal parking cat-and-mouse game on the roadways.

We are expecting visitors in the next couple of weeks and I just discovered that Pearson will still not allow non-passengers to enter the terminals. I had intended to take the UPX out and pick them up that way but apparently not. I suppose it makes some sense but ..... they can text or phone when they are on the train and we can go to Union.

That's what Pearson says, but there's no one actively monitoring who's a non-passenger and who's a passenger.

Dont worry about it, non-passengers can enter the terminals just fine.

I will keep an eye on what people say nearer the date but thanks for this, I was wondering how exactly they would manage to keep the riff-raff out!

Yeah, I noticed that too. A couple of weeks ago I got dropped off at Terminal 1 to catch the UP Express. There were signs and a security post, but no one stopped me from entering.

Hopefully September is when they'll bring back 15 min all day service, while allowing GO trains to finally operate 30 min all day and bringing back the Express/Local trains during peak times. That's the ideal way to deal with the busy traffic, at least until the expansion on the entire line as a whole is finished.

Me who just goes through the parking garage next to the bus strip...

But going through the airport itself i can agree that no one really stops you and they really shouldn't if you're just on ground level.

If you’re stopped, tell them you’re going to the ground level of the terminal to get a bus. There are a few intercity buses that serve Pearson, but not downtown. They’d probably only shoo you away if you hang around the arrivals area.
