Am I correct that all but one of the entrances from the GO station side go directly to the TTC gates? And that the only doors that do are substantially blocked by the stairs down to the platforms below?

If so, this is going to remain a clusterf*&k of foot traffic between the two stations every morning. The vast majority of people getting off the GO train in the morning are not headed to the TTC, they are headed to the path.

It was a huge problem this morning, but remember, the GO Concourse is moving later this year.

Will this tarp become a permanent wall?

If it does it will become the only station where you can only see your track, not the other track.

Also, are both platforms roughly the same size?

It's going to be a glass wall. If it weren't there, people going to the Yonge line would incorrectly wait for their train here and only find out that they're on the wrong platform when the doors don't open.

Well, the Bay Concourse is only closing temporarily for construction; it'll re-open. Granted when it does we will still have some of the traffic heading out through the York Concourse and Northwest PATH, but any traffic issues that exist due to the new Union subway station concourse layout will likely be permanent issues.

Looked fine when I went through. There are 20 doors out of the TTC station compared to 6 into the GO station. I can't imagine there will be issues on the TTC side.

It's always going to be crowded. Overall, it looks a lot bigger than it used to.

Looking at the existing and proposed at http://www.ttc.ca/PDF/About_the_TTC..._Station_Presentation_March_4_2011.pdf#page=3 the west bypass fare unpaid area is much wider that the old bottleneck between the stairs, and is now quite separate from most of the people walking to the TTC station. If you stay left (while heading north), you should have a much easier walk through the station than you used to, assuming you come out of those doors from the GO station.

Sort of - there's a lot of space between the tarp and the edge of the old platform - presumably as a work area for the construction crew.

It varies. I'd say the old platform will the the widest. The new one is variable. Very wide in some spots. But almost a bit narrow at others (though wider than the old platforms).

Plus don't forget that the York concourse and NW PATH will help to redistribute users away from the Union Subway Concourse bypass.

Indeed! Though if GO expands as much as is forecast, in the end, it could easily be just as crowded as before ... but with double the people.

Keep in mind that the interface between the Union rail station (Go) and the Union subway station will change substantially once the new retail concourse is complete in Union Rail station

It will always be crowded down there. The new NW PATH extn won't siphon off enough people to make much of a difference.

Meanwhile, what opened today doesn't mean that anything at Union Subway Station is complete yet, there's still a lot to come and it should get easier to navigate soon, and then harder, and then easier, and back and forth as components of the whole area get worked on over the next few years.

Fun, wow!

And don't underestimate the ability of new/upcoming/proposed projects (e.g. 45 Bay complex) to draw commuters along different routes.

Yes, that could get interesting. Presumably there'd be no pathways across and/or below the tracks further east. Presumably Metrolinx's proposal to extend the Union platforms will ultimately lead to platform exits to Simcoe and Yonge one day as well!
