Figured I would create a thread for Ontario’s third major battery plant under construction, located in Loyalist, just west of Kingston. The plant itself is located on a large plot of land down by Lake Ontario, southwest of the intersection of Camden East Road and Taylor Kidd Boulevard. This section of Loyalist contains a lot of large industrial/institutional tenants, including Alstom’s Kingston Plant, Millhaven Quarry, Millhaven/Bath Institution, Coco Paving/GIP, and is right next door to the former Invista/Millhaven Fibres Plant that was demolished in 2013. Kingston has not historically been part of the automotive industry, so this is a major game changer for the region. With the addition of this battery plant, a total of five are being built in Canada (Windsor/LG-Stellantis, St. Thomas/Volkswagen-PowerCo, Loyalist/Umicore, Montreal/Northvolt, and Ford/Becancour). A sixth plant is currently being rumoured for Winnipeg.

The plant is being built by Umicore and represents a $2.8B investment in the EV sector. They broke ground back in October so construction has been ongoing for a few months now.

I don't suppose anyone in government gave any thought to shifting the road to the north so as to provide a critical mass of waterfront parkland and room for the Waterfront Trail?
