The Making of a New Regent Park: Challenges to Revitalization
8/30/2005

How do you revitalize Canada's largest and oldest social housing community without disenfranchising the 7,500 people of all ages and cultures who call it home? The Toronto Community Housing Corporation has a 12-year building and environmental strategy to replace the deteriorating buildings and poorly planned public spaces and facilities. It calls for a leading edge mixed income/mixed tenure community that will emphasize excellence in architectural, urban, and environmentally sustainable design ideas.

Learn about Toronto Community Housing's plan and participate in the debate about managing expectations and real challenges around urban renewal. The event is part of IIDEX/Neocon Canada 2005 and is presented by the Toronto Society of Architects. It takes place on Thursday, September 22 from 11:30am-12:30pm at Toronto's National Trade Centre. Moderated by Christopher McCormack, Chair of the Toronto Society of Architects, the Panel includes Derek Ballantyne, CEO, Toronto Community Housing, and Mark Guslits, Chief Development Officer, Toronto Community Housing.

OAA Architecture Week
8/30/2005

Architecture Week 2005 will take place September 24 to October 1. Architecture Week, originally started in 1997, has grown over the years into an exciting annual province-wide event celebrated to raise public awareness and appreciation of architects and their work. The week is designed to celebrate the profession and the role of the architect as they create the special places where we live, work and play.

The 14 regional societies of the OAA are hosting several events to celebrate and honour the profession in communities across Ontario. The goal of the regional societies is to promote the profession of architecture and educate the public on their community's architectural history, focusing on the impact architects have on an ever changing world as well as the diversity and skill of the profession. Societies and communities coordinate efforts during the week to create events that are both educational and enjoyable. Events include community-based projects, student design competitions, tours of local sites, exhibits, and lectures. Museums, libraries, historical societies, and community groups across the province are also invited to participate during the week with activities that compliment the spirit of Architecture Week.

For further information on Architecture Week or would like to involve your community in the week's events, contact Michelle Hamilton, Coordinator Societies and Outreach at michelleh@oaa.on.ca. Also, please check the OAA's calendar listing at www.oaa.on.ca for events taking place during Architecture Week and throughout the fall.

Thanks wylie

Very interesting - I wonder if the AKTC lectures will deal with Toronto projects specifically, since both Correa and Maki are involved with the Ismali Centre and Museum...
