The completed construction of New Jubilee House in downtown south, providing 162 new homes for at risk seniors and low income residents, was celebrated today by Mayor Gregor Robertson and Sam Sullivan, MLA for Vancouver - False Creek.
The New Jubilee house is located at 1099 Richards Street, across the street from the original Jubilee House, which opened in 1986 at 508 Helmcken Street.
Replacing the original Jubilee House, the building offers a mix of 116 studios and 46 one-bedroom homes. A total of 87 units will house the existing at risk seniors of the former Jubilee House and 75 units will be offered at low end of market rates.
City and provincial investment
The City invested $30.6 million to the project through Community Amenity Contributions and the land exchange agreement with Brenhill Developments Ltd. The Government of B.C. provided $39 million in interim construction financing for the project.
“This project represents our commitment to ensure Vancouver’s most vulnerable residents have affordable and accessible housing, and we are very thankful to all the partners that have made the new Jubilee House a reality," said Mayor Gregor Robertson. "I’m confident this new building will not only improve the residents’ quality of life, and will be a place they will be proud to call home.”
Jubilee House a 'unique partnership'
“This project is the result of a unique partnership between the public and private sector to address the need for affordable and supportive housing in Downtown Vancouver. The new Jubilee House will provide a home for those that need it most for years to come,” said Sam Sullivan, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek.
To foster positive social outcomes, New Jubilee House provides an impressive range of amenities such as a library, lounge, computer room, communal kitchen and roof top garden. These spaces will offer enhanced programming and encourage friendships and connections between residents.
This initiative is a key part of our Housing and Homelessness strategy, aimed at revitalizing existing social housing units and creating new affordable, community focused housing.
127 Society for Housing to manage building
