From Waterfrontoronto:
Project Description & Goals
Since its formation in 2001, Waterfront Toronto has been developing precinct plans for waterfront areas in need of revitalization. The Lower Yonge Precinct is an extension of this process and has the potential to be a crucial link between downtown Toronto, more established waterfront developments such as Harbourfront, and newly developing communities such as the East Bayfront Precinct. Given the precinct’s prominence at the foot of historic Yonge Street, the site is expected to become part of the group of productive and inspiring communities that Waterfront Toronto is creating along the waterfront.
The study area is prominently positioned within the city. It is located within a 7-10 minute walking distance of such established Toronto landmarks as Union Station, Air Canada Center, Toronto Islands Ferry Terminal, Sony Center for the Performing Arts, St. Lawrence Market, and the waterfront itself.
The Lower Yonge Precinct study area is approximately 62 acres (25 hectares) in area not including the rail corridor. The precinct extends from Bay Street in the west to Lower Jarvis Street in the east, and from the northern edge of the rail corridor to Queens Quay in the south.
The site has a number of infrastructure, ownership, and on-going planning initiatives that, in concert with the development framework, will forge its unique identity. Producing a successful development framework will require creative strategies to integrate overlapping interests and infrastructural challenges while at the same time developing an innovative and cohesive vision for the Lower Yonge Precinct.
