For the second time in less than a month, Toronto police have charged a Wheel Trans taxi driver with sexually assaulting a handicapped passenger.
The alleged incident took place on Friday, police said, when the driver assaulted a mentally challenged female in the city's east end.
An arrest came Sunday after a weekend-long investigation.
The driver, police said, was under contract to the TTC-operated Wheel Trans service, but was not an employee of the transit commission and had only been driving for the service for "a short period of time."
Muhammad Asif, 40, of Brampton is charged with one count of sexual assault. He will appear in the Toronto East Courts on April 20.
The case echoes a similar incident in February when police arrested another Wheel Trans taxi driver after he allegedly fondled a handicapped woman. In that case, the 33-year-old victim refused the driver's advances and she was eventually driven home, police said.
-------------------------------------------------
this and assaults seem to be a very common occurrence with the contracted drivers
some of my beefs with the contracted drivers includes talking on cell phones while driving, smoking (they ask but sometimes you're scared to say no - see next point) and when they drive like psychos and get all pissed off at other drivers.
don't get me wrong, alot of the contracted drivers are very good and courteous people, you can have great conversations with them, etc. but there are some bad apples that need to be tossed away.
this is not a good excuse or a defense. the TTC needs to screen contracted workers better and a policy needs to be made where the most vunerable passengers only travel with TTC employees.
as per hear-say, there currently are no background checks done on contracted drivers, some of them have criminal records, etc.
