Construction on the 34-storey apartment tower at 165 West Superior Street in Chicago is now above ground level. Magellan Development Group, Mac Management and Parse Capital have partnered together to bring 298 units with an average size of 715 square feet to the city's River North neighbourhood.
The site was formerly occupied by a Howard Johnson Inn which was demolished earlier this year. In its place, a 357-foot building will rise alongside a small park and dog run on the corner of Superior and Wells Streets. Retail will be provided along Superior and LaSalle with the four-storey podium also hosting some residential units and parking.
Designed by bKL Architecture, the glass and masonry building was inspired by the area's historical architecture. Residents will have several amenities to enjoy, including a fitness centre, spa, and outdoor roof deck.
New photos from Forum member harryc show the concrete building rising about three floors above the street. The location of the future park is now being used as a construction staging area, as seen in the image below.
Most investment by Magellan Development Group has been focused in the Lakeshore East neighbourhood, where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan. 165 West Superior deviates from the company's usual target area, representing a branching out into other downtown neighbourhoods.
