Cities all over the world are setting their sights higher and higher, building new residential, office, and hotel projects at heights never before seen in their quarters. As Seoul nears completion of its new tallest building, another city halfway across the world is celebrating the construction of its next highest tower. Across from the island of Manhattan, Jersey City is preparing to rival the latest lofty New York City skyscrapers with a 79-storey residential building steps from the Hudson River.
Officials from developer China Overseas America and architect Perkins Eastman were on hand to celebrate the start of construction with a ceremonial ground breaking. Soaring 274 metres (900 feet) above sea level, 99 Hudson Street will climb above the 238-metre or 780-foot Goldman Sachs tower at 30 Hudson Street, which is currently the state's tallest building. To boast the "best view in the world," its 781 units will replace a parking lot that occupies the entire city block.
An eight-storey podium to the west of the tower will be topped by greenery. The project will hold 15,000 square feet of retail space framed by expansive windows and limestone exposures, which together, will also form the facade of the tower itself. A 7,365-square-foot plaza will be enjoyed by both residents and the wider public.
The city of 262,000 is undergoing a population explosion and is anticipated to knock Newark off its pedestal soon and become the largest city in New Jersey. With substantial condominium towers like these and URL® Harborside gracing the skyline, the municipality is stepping out of Manhattan's shadow and cementing its own identity.
