Auckland City Council has approved plans for what will be the city's tallest residential structure, a 52-storey rental tower set to soar above the surrounding skyline. Designed by local firm Peddle Thorp Architects, the new development is representative of a plan to redevelop the Customs Street East block between Fort Street and Gore Street, located within the city centre.
Topped with a distinct slanted pinnacle, the tower's unique look will come with the added benefit of reducing its shadow impact on the surrounding neighbourhood. Down at street level, the base will incorporate the facade of an 11-storey heritage office building, which will help ease the tower's transition into the surrounding streetscape. Seen in the rendering below, the tower will feature a geometric diamond pattern along its flank, with a number of irregularly placed recessed balconies on its street-facing facade, and the podium level given over to retail and dining.
To be comprised of 221 rental apartments, the tower will offer 11 floors of penthouses and a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, bringing hundreds of residents into the heart of central Auckland. The four-storey podium will add retail and dining options at street level, emphasizing the urban character of this new development.
Taking a cue from Auckland's beautiful waterfront, every unit within the tower will be north-facing, allowing for an unencumbered view of the Waitemata Harbour. Once complete, the tower will be a striking addition to the Auckland skyline, a sign of the city's ongoing urban transformation.
