New office space, including a prominent downtown campus for online shopping giant Amazon, has redefined the image of Seattle's Denny Triangle neighbourhood. Feeding the influx of these state-of-the-art office buildings are developments like Stonebridge Companies' hotel at 924 Howell Street. The 302-room Residence Inn by Marriott capitalizes on the high demand for hotel rooms in the area, an indicator of Seattle's healthy tourism sector that will only be amplified as the busy summer season begins.

The site of the 15-storey hotel is located adjacent to the planned Washington State Convention Center expansion. The hotel itself will include a 7,000-square-foot conference centre and a fitness facility. A lobby bar and about 1,300 square feet of retail space are set to occupy the main level, while each suite will come with a kitchenette and work area for business and extended-stay travellers.

Johnson Braund and Weber Thompson performed architectural services on the project. The podium will be clad in a variety of materials, including natural stone, metal panels, spandrel, and vision glass. A canted glass corner has been envisioned as a response to the shifted street grid across Howell. Vertical mullions will be incorporated into the facade to highlight the verticality of this design element.

As excavation for the three below-grade parking levels wraps up, Forum contributor SounderBruce spotted the erection of the tower crane on a recent visit to the site. Completion is currently scheduled for the fall of 2017, and not a moment too soon. With Seattle's hotel occupancy rate sitting at a staggering 93.5%, the seaport city has been in dire need of new rooms. 924 Howell Street addresses that demand with a tasteful design that contributes to the urban fabric of the densifying Denny Triangle.
