The SLS Hotels brand is branching out across the United States following successful launches in cities like Miami, Atlanta, and Seattle. Their Philadelphia property will be the second residential project in the SLS portfolio and the tallest ground-up residential building in the state of Pennsylvania. The International at SLS Lux Philadelphia Hotel and Residences will be executed by Dranoff Properties in partnership with Los Angeles-based hotelier SBE Entertainment.
The Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed luxury tower will contain 90 exclusive condominium residences harmoniously arranged alongside 152 hotel rooms and approximately 4,600 square feet of ground-level retail space. To be located at Broad and Spruce Streets in Center City Philadelphia, the timeless glass design features a number of balconies and pinstripes that accentuate the height of the building. The expertise and creative talents of globally renowned interior designer Philippe Starck have been retained; the project will be the Parisian's first ever in the city.
The mix of hospitality, residential, and retail uses taps into the existing energy of the "Avenue of the Arts," while promising to enhance its appeal as a glamorous destination for culture, art, and fine dining. "French design has long been a hallmark of Philadelphia's aesthetic," said Carl Dranoff, Founder and CEO of Dranoff Properties. "In the early 20th century, it was Paul Philippe Cret who gave us the celebrated Rodin Museum, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge. Today, it is Philippe Starck who is poised to redefine Philadelphia design with the SLS LUX Philadelphia Hotel. To have an interior designer of Philippe's caliber and world-class acclaim for this project truly speaks to Dranoff Properties' and sbe's shared commitment to excellence but also, to the transformational nature of this project for Philadelphia as an emergent global city."
The site of the project was the former home of the legendary Philadelphia International Records. Though the physical structure that once housed the record label has been demolished, the name of the new development recalls the memory of the fabled icon created by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The project has been slated for a 2017 start. When complete, residents will share the carefully crafted amenities on offer to hotel guests, including a landscaped sundeck, 75-foot indoor pool, state-of-the-art fitness centre, and a full-service spa.
