The University of Windsor's board of governors have signed off on the construction of a new $73 million sports facility that will help breathe new life into the campus and local community. To be known as the Lancer Sport and Recreation Centre, the facility will cost students $55 million over the next 30 years in annual fees, the remaining $18 million to be footed by the university.

At twice the size of its predecessor, the 12,000 square-foot Lancer Sport and Recreation Centre will have room for a multitude of activities and sports, including three gymnasiums with seating for 2,700, an eight-lane pool, as well as a large multi-purpose fitness centre with spaces for yoga, spin classes, dance, martial arts, and CrossFit.

Beyond athletics, the Lancer Sport and Recreation Centre will serve as a new student hub, a place where teammates can gather before and after games, as well as the new home for other events, such as the annual FIRST Robotics tournament.

Outside the centre, upgrades to surrounding sports fields will take place, including the construction of a cricket pitch, and re-turfing and refurbishing of other grass fields in the vicinity.

Set to open in 2021, the Lancer Sport and Recreation Centre will be a welcome addition to the University of Windsor and to the broader community, future players and attendees of university sports tournaments to be treated to a modern, high quality facility.
