Foster + Partners has won a design competition for a residential development in Shenzhen aimed exclusively for professionals with intensive work-centred lifestyles. Qianhai Talents' Apartments will contain rental units uniquely positioned for single persons, or those living away from their families, who have a strong desire for privacy but also an internal sense of community.
This new type of building design demanded an innovative architectural approach that balances exclusivity with co-living spaces. A kitchenette located in every apartment will provide residents with daily necessities, while remaining areas are grouped to create a shared space for communal cooking, consolidating 12 units across three levels to form a cluster. Spanning three levels, the shared dining space serves as the cultural and social hub for residents.
The communal dining space is augmented by a podium deck, a dedicated spot for relaxation. Additional planned amenities include a residents' clubhouse, wellness and spa centre, and a co-working space. Special curated events hosted within the amenity space will bring residents and the public together.
Qianhai Talents' Apartments will be built using modular construction. Prefabrication ensures quality control while speeding up the construction process. Two shear walls will enclose every two units, offering the ability to combine the units in the future.
"As working practices evolve rapidly, so do patterns of living. The residential rental sector in China is fertile grounds for innovation as more people move to the cities in search of opportunities," said Luke Fox, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. "Located at the heart of Qianhai financial district, the Talents' Apartments recreate the intimate feeling of home. The shared spaces within the complex facilitate real connections and create positive impact on people’s lives."
