Part 1: From Nichols to Katz, dreams to battles, 2005-08
The downtown arena is soon to open and to dominate Edmonton’s new cycles like it hasn’t in years, so here’s a refresher on the long, divisive and angry eight-year debate that saw the arena planned, approved and built.

I’m going to break these posts up and publish them over a few weeks. This first part starts with the announcement from Oilers owner Cal Nichols that a new arena was needed in Edmonton and ends with Daryl Katz taking over the team in July 2008 and spelling out his hope to quickly get going on the arena negotiations, which in the end would drag out five long and difficult years.

October 2, 2005, Edmonton Journal: “(Oilers owner Cal) Nichols has a new goal, one that will require the community to be mobilized in a manner it hasn’t been in decades: the building of a new arena.”

October 3, 2005, Mayor Stephen Mandel: “I think it’s something that the province should take a look at. The city will support the project as much as we can, but we have a limited capacity.”

October 3, 2005: City councillor Mike Nickel: “I have always been very skeptical of handing over millions of dollars to million-dollar owners and million-dollar hockey players.”

Edmonton's Rogers Place hires nearly 200 part-time employees through social agencies
More than 175 clients of inner-city social agencies will get part-time jobs serving food and drinks at Rogers Place.

Seventeen others have been hired to help with giving directions and taking tickets. Six have been hired after getting training through NorQuest College’s new hospitality institute, a program running with $1.5 million in bursaries and support from the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.

With an open house looming for the new arena, eyes are turning to downtown and many will wonder if Edmonton’s big move is paying off. The promised redevelopment in new hotels and office towers should rebalance city books. But will the new arena be a burden or a blessing for the locals?

The discolored panels in the front/top of the arena were apparently caused by not removing the protective layer(s) early enough and the glue baked on to the stainless steel and cannot be removed. They should be replaced soon, crisis averted lol.

Great building -- watch -- it is going to get so many stellar reviews that it is going to pump up the collective egos of Daryl Katz and the Oilers Entertainment Group to a positive benefit for Edmonton. There are some exciting times ahead!
 
Anyone have any idea when the Gateway Casino, OEG, Katz Group signage will be going up? Looking forward to seeing that finishing touch, and I would have to believe it is going up really soon with the casino opening scheduled in 2 weeks.
