Stantec Tower now going up
Construction on the tower that will eventually be Edmonton’s tallest is underway.

Stantec officially broke ground at the site of their new tower at 102 Street and 103 Avenue, which developers have named Ice District, on Thursday morning.

New Stantec Tower superstructure to become tallest building in Edmonton

EDMONTON – August 4, 2016 – Today, ICE District Properties Joint Venture and global design firm, Stantec, are celebrating the beginning of ICE District’s newest skyscraper – Stantec Tower. Once complete, this superstructure will become the tallest building in Edmonton and part of one of the largest mixed-use projects in Canada.

The 66-storey tower will have 28 storeys of offices and approximately 481 residential units. It is set to open in two phases - fall 2018 for the office units and fall 2019 for the residential component. The building has been fully designed, engineered and project managed by Stantec, demonstrating its world-class capabilities and experience.

The new tower will consolidate more than 1,700 Stantec employees into one centralized location in the heart of Edmonton’s downtown revitalization project. When the organization moves in fall 2018, Stantec will occupy 19 floors and close to 460,000 square feet of the new tower.

Targeting a LEED Gold certification upon completion, Stantec Tower will be a state-of-the-art, 820 foot high (250 metres) structure that will be an integral component of ICE District. Located at the corner of 102nd Street and 103rd Avenue, the tower will include iconic design elements, including a lobby that opens into the vibrant public plaza providing convenient access to Rogers Place and Ford Hall.

“Today’s celebration marks another exciting development built to provide Edmontonians a great place to work, live and play,” said Glen Scott, Senior Vice President, Real Estate, Katz Group. “Stantec Tower will serve as a cornerstone structure within ICE District and its very magnitude will make the rest of the country take notice.”

Stantec’s new headquarters will provide the organization with more space and increased proximity to the great amenities that ICE District has to offer.

Including Stantec, the tower is more than XX per cent leased and will also be home to PwC Canada and Dentons Canada LLP. ICE District will also be the future home of the Edmonton Oilers, Rogers Place, JW Marriott Edmonton, condominiums, retail space, restaurants, nightlife, a vibrant public plaza and more.

Tallest building west of Toronto reaches construction milestone for Edmonton's Stantec

A 66-storey building set to make Edmonton’s skyline the highest in Western Canada reached a construction milestone Thursday.“This is a massive gesture of confidence on the part of Edmontonians to have the audacity to build a building like this,” Mayor Don Iveson said while on site to celebrate the last concrete pour to complete the foundation.
He added that investments in both private and public infrastructure have helped the city weather the provincial economic downturn.
While Stantec is the main tenant, the $500-million skyscraper will also include condo units, retail outlets and office space, including two floors for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Stantec CEO Bob Gomes said a significant number of employees — 1,700 — will be relocated to Stantec Tower, which will be its new world headquarters.
“From this point onward, we’ll see it move upward,” he said.
The retail space will be ready by mid-2018, while the offices are set to open in 2018. The residential portion is slated to open in fall 2019.
Tower quickfacts:

• The Stantec Tower will be the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto. It will have one million square feet of space and will stand 250 metres.

I, too, wish this one could go through a re-design -- very static, very unimaginative! This is going to dominate Edmonton's skyline for probably 3 or more decades; I just think that "they" could do better. If the design originated in TO then it reeks of "it's only Edmonton, it is good enough"; if from Edmonton, then the design principals should be run out of town. If the only comparative standard is "height", then yes, it is a dominant structure -- no better, no worse than First Canadian Place in TO or Brookfield Place in Calgary.
 
@archited It probably won't win any awards, but I feel it's a solid design, and based again on those previews of the cladding, it will look very clean and sharp. It's no starchitecture, but I don't feel like it's a compromise either. In fact I think this will probably be the most "Toronto" tower in Alberta yet; see photos of the recently completed One York / SunLife Financial Tower in Toronto to see what I mean, e.g.:

@Daveography -- I am in 100% agreement. That is why I stated "no better, no worse" than Brookfield Place or First Canadian Place. If you were going through a City with many high-rise office towers -- New York, Hong Kong, etc. and this project was one of the elements on the skyline, you wouldn't spare it a second glance. In my mind, it doesn't quite fall to the level of mediocrity and, if that were 5 on a design scale between 1 and 10, then I would give this a solid 6. I guess I was hoping for an iconic structure to hold the title of "dominant on Edmonton's skyline".
 
I agree to! The Stantec Tower is not a mind blowing design, but it will transform Edmonton's skyline forever, and will be the most dominant structure for many years to come!
