They look way better as thumbnails, than they do blown up, but here's a teaser of a big set of pictures I'll post tomorrow from my evening out tonight. :D

After having spent the long weekend up visiting my fiancee's dad in Edmonton, we decided to go for an evening stroll around downtown Calgary. My fiancee was among the hordes of Pokemon catchers while I tried to take some pictures along the way. Sadly my phone didn't perform as well in low light as I would have liked it to. It was gorgeous evening yesterday and I wasn't fully able to do it justice, but I think I got a few good ones in the two hours we were out and about. I took around 100 shots, but the upload limit is 15. So here's the ones I liked the most.

We parked at City Hall and made our way to the East Village first.

We then walked up to Prince's Island through Chinatown. There were literally hundreds of Pokemon players out. Say what you want about the game, but if it wasn't for it I'm sure downtown would have been deserted.

Lastly we walked up 3rd Street to Stephen Ave and back to City Hall.

(The pretty lady in the green sweater is my fiancee. :))

These pictures are also a month old now, but I still really wanted to share them. They were taken on a gloriously sunny September evening and they're of the U of C Campus which is surprisingly a rare subject given how much it has changed in the last 5 years. Arcitecture has never been the U of C's strong suit, but I think the new buildings are mostly improvements. I'm sad to see so much green space go though. Not just for new buildings, but they seemed to have paved over some rather extensive swaths for foot paths and plazas as well. The feel of the U of C is a little more modern an I think harmonious that it used to be, but it also feels a little more sterile in places.

This is actually the skyline from SAIT, not the U of C. I happened to be there earlier the same day and it's still somewhat collegiate so I feel like it fits. It was also my first shot with my new camera.

The Taylor Family Digital Library isn't bad and definitley kicks the pants off the old Library Tower, but the nice little wetland out front is pretty poor compensation for the nice green space populated by tall old elms that used to occupy the TFDL's plot. The main entryway is probably the worst instance of overpaving. Maybe they could throw a mural up on that bit of the Rozsa Centre or put a garden in front of it there to add some more life. That bit of wall was pretty inocuous when it was on a back road hidden by trees, but it's a little harsh against that plaza.

Three new buildings on the North end of campus, the new education building, some new dorms and the face of the revamped engineering building.

Some green spaces near the Olympic Oval and the Swann Mall.

This building is actually approaching a decade old now, but it was the only new building actually completed while I was attending school, so it still feels new to me. The International House/Hotel Alma is still my favourite building on Campus.

There's a lot of stuff happening at the university these days. I don't get over that way very often...thanks for the photo updates!

I've always liked the look of International house. It reminds me of newer buildings in Germany or Netherlands.
